Produced in 2016 by artist John Craig Freeman in partnership with the ZERO1 American Arts Incubator, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the U.S. Consulate General in Wuhan, Portal to an Alternative Reality, Wuhan acts as an access point where the public is able to immerse themselves in virtual and augmented reality experiences that document the rapidly changing city of Wuhan, China. This project was remastered in 2021 for exhibition in the VR Art Village in Sansar. The portfolio of work from Wuhan includes hundreds of individual scenes from dozens of locations around the city, including Wet Market and Warlord Palace. Additional locations will be added over time. Visitors to the VR Art Village pass through the Wuhan Portal Gate to teleport to the virtual reality experiences. QR codes at each individual scene provide access to that experience in augmented reality. Simply read the code using a smartphone camera to install the Hoverlay app and view the scene.
